How do we pick our counselors?

The connection a camp counselor makes with a child can make or break the child's camp experience. So we're super-selective in the staff we hire. We want your child to come away from Aloha Beach Camp saying, "I've got the coolest counselor in the world!" And we're committed to making that happen for you.

Our staff is comprised of both male and female counselors who are at least 19 (many are in their mid-20s and 30's) and who have previous experience working with kids. Since we've got more than a 70% annual staff return rate -- almost unheard of in the summer camp industry -- they have lots of first-hand experience working at camp, too.

Many of them are school teachers who'd rather work at camp than teach summer school or get another job. Some are college students studying child development or psychology. Others are college grads in the process of getting their Masters degrees in Recreation or Education. The list goes on.

In any event, there are certain prerequisites to working here that all our counselors must meet. Each must pass a rigorous 3-phase interview process including drug testing and a criminal background check. They must also be certified lifeguards and trained and certified in CPR and First Aid, too.

My wife and I send our own daughter and sons to Aloha and want to be sure our staff are role models for them. So you can be sure can be sure they'll be good role models for your kids, too. Because if they're not, they won't be working here very long, and that's the Aloha truth!
