Since every child develops at their own pace, it's not always easy to know if your child is emotionally, physically, or psychologically ready for a camp experience. In fact, very often an older child who may seem ready for camp really isn't. And a younger child who does not appear ready actually is.
If your child gets along well with other children and has no problem being separated from you, he or she is probably ready for a camp experience.
On the flip side, there is no harm in waiting a year or two before sending your kids to camp if you don't think they're ready just yet.
